Literature analysis of "The Stationmaster"
During Russian culture lesson we minded story written by Aleksander Pushkin "The Station -master" . I was interested in analysing climax of the story from the perspective of the author , thats why my question is :
Question : Which literature tools author uses for creating a tension during climax of the story ?
Plot :
Whole story was written from a third person view . Role of the narrator were played by the traveller whom name or any other sort of characteristics wasn't mentioned . Whole exposition were spend on explanation of two main characters Dunia and her father , and establishment of relationships between them and traveller. Rising action happens from appearance of the traveller in a few years in the same train and his meeting with a stationmaster. Climax takes place during the story of stationmaster about vanishment of his daughter. Resolution suppose to be finding out about death of stationmaster .
Analysis:
Author creating tension in order to emotionally link reader to the story , and make reader to exaggerate to characters . He actively doing it during the Climax part , as example I would take questioning's "what had blinded him?" and "what had deprived him of reason?" these is form of communication between a author and a reader as it makes reader to consider a questions given by the author .He also using a metaphor to give a question more emotional and sacrificing content.
Sentence structure
Author during the paragraph were using allot of explanations and descriptions of the setting in order to create a better imagery for the reader for example "the priest was leaving the altar, the sexton extinguishing the candles, and two old women still praying in a corner".
Author uses long sentence for the explanation and gaining of action around the Dunia.
Afterwards following short sentence creating a mystery and tension around it "but Dunia was not there".
Word choice :
Conclusion:
During the analysis of the chapter , I found allot of literal devices for establishment of tension such as language features, descriptive writing, short sentences, repetition and questions. All that effecting a reader and helps him to shape in his mind an imagery of the actions which are happening in the book and better understand character.s
Climax
Dunia got into the carriage next to the hussar, the orderly jumped up next to the driver, the driver whistled, and the horses started off at a gallop.
Later the poor stationmaster could not understand how he could have permitted Dunia to go off with the hussar; what had blinded him? what had deprived him of reason? Half an hour had scarcely passed when his heart began to ache and ache, and anxiety overwhelmed him to such a degree that he could no longer resist setting out for the church himself. He could see as he approached the church that the congregation was already dispersing, but Dunia was neither in the churchyard nor on the porch. He hurried into the church: the priest was leaving the altar, the sexton extinguishing the candles, and two old women still praying in a corner; but Dunia was not there. Her poor father could hardly bring himself to ask the sexton if she had been to mass. She had not, the sexton replied.
